Apple introduced a number of PowerBook computers,
all of which use "PowerBook" & "G3" in the name
What's worse is that many of them look
nearly identical. Don't feel dumb-we get calls on this nearly every day!
There are two easy ways to identify the various PowerBook G3 models: by family number
or by visual inspection.
Family numbers are not the same as model
numbers. Family numbers are listed on the bottom of your G3 (see below)

2000 PowerBook (FireWire)
"Pismo"
The PowerBook (FireWire) computer (M7572)
is very similar in appearance to the 1999 PowerBook G3 Series (Bronze keyboard) "Lombard".
The 2000 PowerBook G3 can be identified in the following two ways, it only has "PowerBook"
stenciled on the display bezel and 2 FireWire ports have replaced the square SCSI
port used on the 1999 version. See photo below.

(M5343) has an embedded white Apple logo in its display.

1998 PowerBook G3 Series
"WallStreet"
The Macintosh PowerBook G3 Series (M4753),
has a large white Apple logo embedded near the middle of the display housing. The
G3 Series has two PC Card slots and a Modem port on its left side. On the rear of
the computer, the microphone and speaker ports are exposed to the left of the power
connector.
There are several versions of the G3 Wallstreet:
a 12", 13", 14", and with 6 different processing speed sets. Check
the area near your serial number for full details-it is usually written with your
full configuration there. Or check the "Apple System Profiler" for your
processing speed.
Note: some early versions of the Wallstreet
do NOT have the S-Video out port.

1997 PowerBook G3 "Kanga"

The Macintosh PowerBook G3 (M3553) has
a small, six-color Apple logo on the exterior display housing, two small vents on
the display housing, and it closely resembles the PowerBook 3400.. It has a 12"
TFT LCD, and has two small nameplates on the bottom of the LCD housing.
